A Vampire Trilogy: Isle of the Undead: Book III

As we were driving along the only narrow road to the airport with the boys in the back seat, a car sped past us. It was unusual for anyone to drive faster than Galian, so I figured it had to be a vampire at the wheel. When we came over a hill, the same car was stopped at the side of the road, and a tall, dark-haired man was waving us down. Galian slowed our vehicle and parked on the shoulder about 500 feet behind the stopped car.  Neither of us recognized the driver.

“Wait here,” Galian ordered.” I’ll be right back after I find out what he wants.”

“I’ll go too, Dad.” Delian wasn’t making a request. He was going with his father.

I watched as the two of them quickly walked along the road, “What seems to be the problem?”  Galian asked as they approached the stranger.

With that, Brian yelled out from our car, “Look out! Shooters!”

At that moment, a long-range shot rang out and Galian fell. I screamed and ordered the two youngest boys to drop to the floor of the van. I crouched and opened the door as two men scrambled down the hill to the road, one of them with a gun poised. That was when I recognized the gun as a rocket launcher rather than a rifle. Immediately, Brian raced toward me with Finn and Colin each under an arm.

“Run!” he screamed as he hurled forward with me following in vampire speed. Seconds later the van exploded in a thousand pieces behind us.
